Extended Membership

Extended membership is just that, membership that extends beyond the core collaborative community. These make up web participants, colleagues, researchers and developers that share collaborative goals. They are equal participants in discussion, research and development, as much as they want to be but in most cases they are less involved than other members. They are distinguished in that they do not take an active role in collaborative direction and governance, and they are not funded by the collaborative (although they may receive some less tangible benefits of collaborative association). You can become an extend member just by registering for this site.

Student Membership

We’re always looking for students to work with either as collaborative affiliates or collaborative fellows. Generally we take undergraduates (as affiliates) and graduates (as fellows). Fellowship openings are less available, and contingent on particular projects and funding. Undergraduate students should be at a university in the Greater Boston Area and contact us, making sure to include their name, resume and/or portfolio, and area of specialization (i.e. major).

Full Membership

The best way to ask about being a full member is to email us, although we don’t take a lot of full members.

Why can’t I be a collaborative member?
There are lots of reasons why someone may be unsuitable for collaborative membership beyond our extended network. It’s not necessarily the case that we don’t think you’re smart, successful or do good work. Your work may be too similar to another members, without going beyond. We may feel that you work, while impressive, lacks the forward thinking initiative that we try to focus on. We take a very limited number of collaborative members and full collaborative membership requires the unanimous consent of existing collaborative - not an easy task with such a diverse group.

Membership Infobits

These are general pieces of information that don’t quite fit other places.

Does the Collaborative try limit or control what I can do as a researcher / industrialist / artist?
Not at all. The Collaborative is a support institution. You get exactly what you put in to it. If a subset of the collaborative want to do a spin off corporation that is entirely up to them. If they’d like help, we’ll be there. If they’d like to publish some of the results, or share some of the code at the collaborative that would be great - but it is certainly not required. Full collaborative members have what (in academic terms) we call consulting privileges. We expect them to work outside of the collaborative, but we also expect they’ll work inside too.

Matthew is the Director of the Collaborative. He writes rarely, and that makes him sad.
