For now this is a blog by the Creative Synthesis Collaborative with occasional help from our undergraduate students, colleagues, and friends.

Creative Synthesis evolved from The Media Laboratory @ MIT

Mission Statement

The Collaborative is an independent nonprofit institution dedicated to research and education for the public good. It emphasizes transparency and experimentation in all facets of organization and execution. The Collaborative functions as a boutique research firm, where the results of investigation, even if directed toward industrial or academic aims, promote the public good through an open and shared distillation of process, artifact, and outcome. Our work is framed by the ideal of creative synthesis: that the process of creation is intellectually, mechanically, and socially a synthetic collaboration.

Traditional practices of academia and industry remain disconnected from not only each other, but from their own and the public’s goals and desires. The Collaborative develops insight towards this disconnect by promoting and conducting research in design, engineering, art, and the social sciences. In this pursuit we focus on:

  • Research, as the process of understanding and exploring how the world works to improve it.
  • Education, as the direct result of research, the sharing of knowledge allows unlimited growth.
  • Transparency, as the best possible medium for sharing information and understanding process.
  • Experimentation, as the natural state of the human condition and our underlying method of operation.
  • The Public Good, as the highest standard by which intellectual effort can be evaluated and rewarded.

We believe that from the Collaborations that arise we can develop new models of the processes that surround research, education, industry and academia - forever transforming the way these practices are conducted.
