The upcoming Olympic games have brought greater attention to China’s environmental record and conditions around Beijing. Always an opportunity to showcase technology and development (such as the jetpack that graced the 1984 LA Olympics), the 2008 games will allow planners and contributors to literally present a green facade to a worldwide audience.
The GreenPix Zero Energy Media Wall will stand as one of most dramatic examples of this blend of spectacle and eco-aware sensibilities. The installation–the largest color LED display on earth–will transform the Xicui entertainment building into a massive vista for visual digital works by artists from Asia, Europe, and North America. Their work will play in a loop every night, with the system relying on energy harvested by solar cells to provide power. According to designers:
the building performs as a self-sufficient organic system, harvesting solar energy by day and using it to illuminate the screen after dark, mirroring a day’s climatic cycle.

This is a really exciting idea. I like the idea that public spaces enlightened and ‘activated’ at night by the energy that is captured during the day.
