Strange Mapsexhibits the intriguing ways people have visualized space by layering personal perceptions, fantasies, politics, and humor onto maps. The blog hosts a series of images–instances in which physical geography and culture intersect–and offers commentaries exploring the origin of each cartogram and how each map reflects the public internalization of space and cartographic representations of cultural trends. The collection ranges from the benign and humorous–the cozy chaos of 221B Baker Street and a map of Canada made of cheese–to images touching on the relationship between ethnic identity and nationalism–such as the recent Absolut Vodka ad–to the skewed perspective on the world created by pop culture–including the distorted America depicted in country music.
