The PowerCost Monitor by Blue Line Innovations presents real-time data on household energy consumption–presenting the information as a dollar amount on a wireless display.  The unit, which gives both cost per kilowatt-hour and a cumulative amount spent on power, shows power usage in a more visceral, more immediate, way than the spinning wheel in the meter box on the side of the house (although the display includes a “disk emulator” for those who find it mesmerizing).  By making the information more accessible, and phrasing usage in a way that people will find more concrete, the monitor makes it easier for consumers to gauge their energy demands while giving an added incentive to conserve energy–leading to to reductions in use of 5 to 20 percent in tests conducted by Blue Line.
