Mark Hissink Muller’s Complexity Map creates a tree map that helps Java and J2EE/JEE developers keep unintended complexity to a minimum–effectively monitoring what Ward Cunningham described as “technical debt.” The visualization allows users to trace the effects of early design choices, and avoid feedbacks that can cripple development and efficient use. The representations are created with the Prefuse infovis library, while the data are generated by calculating the “complexity torque” of each of the application’s metric layers. Muller and DNV IT Global Services plan to release Complexity Map under an open source license in May 2008.
