A current project by artist and designer Christian Nold explores non-visual and non-aural perceptions of space and landscape. The Sensory Deprivation Map reflects the experiences of pairs of participants—one of whom is blindfolded and equipped with heavy ear protectors. The traveler relates his or her sensations to a partner who records the information in a notebook and GPS. At the end of an hour’s amble, Nold combines the data from the teams to create a spatial representation of their sensory experiences. The Sensory Deprivation Map builds on Nold’s older Emotion Map, which used Bio Mapping devices to record Galvanic skin responses in participants—essentially creating a cartogram of gut-level responses to personal environments.
