Good Wood Watch, a coalition of Canadian environmental groups, hopes to use the 2010 Winter Olympics as a model for large scale, sustainable construction. Building on Vancouver’s pledge that the games would promote green design, the group wishes to emphasize the potential of the Forest Stewardship Council certification program, guaranteeing that paper and wood products come from sustainably-managed forests. Good Wood Watch has worked for two years to encourage contractors to use certified materials when appropriate, and currently is examining which sites have been most successful in adopting sustainable techniques and materials.
The effort provides a venue for Good Wood Watch to showcase other successful programs in British Columbia, such as the ongoing effort to preserve the Great Bear Rainforest and plans to combine community development, the protection of water resources, and sustainable forestry near the towns of Harrop and Procter.
