The nonprofit group Creative Visions provides socially-conscious artists and designers with funding, technical support, and networking. Two of the group’s projects explore the experiences of Ugandans during the war against the Lord’s Resistance Army–a terrorist group seeking to impose a violent theocracy and infamous for its use of child soldiers.
Catherine Hebert’s documentary, The Other Side of the Country, examines the conflict through the experiences of children and adults searching for safety and positive change in the face of rebel violence and ineffectual government response. The Name Campaign offers supporters a more tangible reminder of the effects of the war. With help from designer Melinda Maria, the program creates military dog-tags with information about children kidnapped by the Lord’s Resistance Army. The two efforts provide detailed views of life during wartime balanced by simple, immediate reminders of the conflict.
