Responding to the ability of film to capture the experiences of abuse survivors and the videotaped beating of Rodney King in the early 1990s, musician Peter Gabriel created WITNESS to help human rights campaigns use video technology to record violations and tell the stories of societies affected by violence.

Originally providing cameras and training to local activists, WITNESS’s mission has expanded recently.  In light of the success of online video-sharing, WITNESS created the Hub to disseminate videos more efficiently.  The Hub reaches a much wider audience far more quickly than Witness’s earlier media outreach programs, and allows activists to safely upload documentary evidence to secure servers.  In addition to the video-sharing features, the Hub helps participants explore issues and cases in a blog and provides forums that allow groups to increase their visibility and raise awareness of specific causes.
