Despite generations of construction and development, hitching posts and horse rings remain scattered around Portland, Oregon. To call attention to these odd relics, artist Scott Wayne Indiana began tying plastic horses to the rings embedded in pavement. The original project encouraged residents to find connections between art and history.
As the program grew, participants adapted the urban environment in ways that embraced the past and strengthened the bonds between residents and public spaces. The Horse Project expanded as volunteers hunted down more rings and posts. A map on Palatial now tracks the program, and participants have built on the project’s original vision by decorating the horses and writing stories and poems about the equine art pieces.
