Nikon’s Small World Competitionhighlights the beauty of the world under the microscope by inviting researchers from a wide range of disciplines to submit their best microphotography. Images are judged based on both their overall aesthetic impact and the information contained. The competition successfully balances an interest in pure research with a sense of the beauty of nature–a sense that in some fields unfortunately leads to the total alienation of images and visualization from data.
The competition’s site includes a gallery of the leading entries from the past thirty years, as well as information on this year’s contest.
