Virginia-based planning firm Sympoetica balances green design principles, a vibrant aesthetic sense, and respect for history with a usercentric approach to land use.  The planners believe that designs based on nature–with an understanding of the rhythm of the land, the importance of interrelationships, and the fluidity of adaption–will lead to the emergence of diverse communities in which the public and private lives of residents are in balance.

In past projects, Sympoetica has created green master-plans for communities, revitalized downtown areas by creating urban parks, and worked to preserve historic sites while making them accessible to the public.  Their approach to planning successfully balances multiple human needs with beauty and an awareness of nature.  Sympoetica’s vision of design mirrors that of Frank Lloyd Wright and Lewis Mumford, particularly Mumford’s notion of biotechnics.
