Friday, September 21, will be National Park(ing) Day. Originally developed by the San Francisco art collective REBAR, the event encourages cities to convert metered parking spaces into temporary parks, providing green areas (albeit small ones) for urban residents and offering people a new way of conceptualizing shared space.
The Trust for Public Land supports the program, providing basic guidance to cities across the United States. Each community adapts the idea to meet its own needs. In Dallas, the park will publicize community gardening. Planners in Louisville, Kentucky, will use digital thermometers to help visitors understand urban micro-climates. Local sponsors in Miami will include art made from sustainable materials.
