Bioluminescence–especially in fireflies–has inspired examinations of complexity and synchronicity, as well as a general sense of wonder. In 2002, Montana State University’s School of Art and the Center for Biofilm Engineering decided to use bioluminescent bacteria as a medium for building a bridge between art and science. The Bioglyphsprogram emerged as team members used a liquid containing bacteria to “paint” petri dishes, which were then installed as pieces of larger works ranging from simple squares to cathedral-like windows and abstract organic designs.
The project led to two exhibits: the first in Montana and a second at the end of the year in New York. The installations presented fantastic visual art, but also helped raise public interest in science. While on a simple level making the microscopic world visible, the works also introduced visitors to questions about quorum sensing and other collective activities that allow microorganisms to adapt to their environment more successfully.
