Working closely with grassroots organizations, the Panos Institute’s Oral Testimony Programme has created a website that explores the effects of development in rural mountain areas. The Mountain Voices site transcribes oral histories from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe and includes introductory information about each region, the local NGOs involved, and the interviewees themselves.
Richard Critchfield traced similar issues in his classic book The Villagers, which examined change on an individual and community level. While focused on many of the same concerns, the Mountain Voices project allows users to quickly search out key themes. The system of internal cross-referencing gives readers a degree of flexibility as they approach key issues and a sense of fluidity and connection as they study the effects of change across cultures.
In addition to its extensive work on highlands communities, the Panos Institute’s research includes examinations of desertification and resettlement.
. Historian Shae Davidson's research interests include public policy and the relationship between culture and civil society. His publications range from articles on industrial history to absurdist poetry.
