Some people have had problems with the recycle-data plugin. The short story is it is likely caused by some namespace like conflicts somewhere in the code. We’ve corrected some of these but we rely on prototype 1.4 for some things and it may cause conflicts with libraries like jQuery or other versions of prototype. Plugins and widgets that depend on these other libraries will likely result in some weird behavior. We’re working on it but upgrading to prototype 1.5.1 produced some interesting bugs.
Of course, this is an experiment and it’s important to get people to participate in the experiment by sharing data. Another thing we’re interested in, however, is the palatability of a license that requires the kind of participatory cost we’re asking (your data and your users). One idea has been to offer the theme under a different licensing agreement and see how many people would pick that instead of the learning license. So we’re going to do just that. Instead of asking you to pay the participatory cost, we’ll offer the option instead that you pay a monetary cost. $10.
Why $10? Well ten dollars is a bit of money, it’s not like buying an iTunes song. If you want to use the theme professionally (for client, as some people seem to be interested) or find the learning license restricting it is a low enough cost to offer that kind of option. Still, it is a high enough cost that we imagine most people will choose to go with the learning license. Obviously we could offer a less restrictive license (one with no cost, and no participatory requirement) but we are consciously trying to avoid altruistic participation and focus solely on an economic model.
If you have some strange situation where you can’t pay the $10 and you can’t use the plugin, just ask and we will more than likely license it to you under some other arrangement. It’s actually kind of hard to think of this situation but (for example) you might be a fourteen year old without a credit card and weird hosting environment. Fair enough, just send a mail to hock [at] creativesynthesis.net.
So what kind of license do you get? We’ve selected the creative commons attribution, no derivative license (if you want a derivative of the theme you’ll have to use the learning license). However we require no attribution and you are welcome to make modifications as long as they are unreleased modifications. Commercial use is welcome and encouraged.
