Creative Synthesis

We’ll be exploring Lisensa, a new content licensing intermediary layer, for the blog content. Basically you register your blog with lisensa, choose the terms of the license, and they handle people who want to license it. They are simply serving as middle men. While creative commons lets people use your content willy nilly, you aren’t always aware of it unless you watch trackbacks and user hits. Much like feedburner, this intermediary could be useful for making this kind of communication a little more opaque from a blogger’s end.

Having seen this in action now, it is kind of interesting but a little different than originally imagined. For noncommercial purposes there seems to be very little benefit. The lisensa link simply takes you to a link to the creative commons license. Commercial use similarly just parrots back information, unless a fee is required. If a fee is required, lisensa does (neatly) handle the transaction. The expectation that it somehow gets information about who is using the content, etc… doesn’t seem to be a feature right now. Too bad, that would have been more useful than middle man link. The about section does seem to mention tracking ’subscribers’ but it seems they only mean commercial ones.
